In 2023, JP Corry demonstrated a steadfast commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) excellence, as evidenced by its comprehensive initiatives in fostering a positive and sustainable workplace. This report encapsulates the company's notable achievements and initiatives in the realms of people-centric programs, equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), health and wellbeing, environmental sustainability, community engagement, and educational outreach.
JP Corry's dedication to ESG principles is evident throughout its operations. In 2023, the company embarked on a journey to align its strategies with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and moving into 2024 they have refocused their efforts towards five SDGs; Health and Wellbeing, Quality Education, Affordable and Clean Energy, Good Jobs and Economic Growth, and Responsible Consumption continuing to adjust their approach following a materiality assessment they hope to release in 2024.
Responsible Leadership:
JP Corry has demonstrated a strong commitment to responsible leadership through active participation in a range of initiatives aimed at fostering sustainability, diversity, and collaboration within the business community. Managing Director, Ciaran McConnell, plays an active role in Business in the Community NI working groups, such as the Good Food Initiative, which was established to tackle the issues of hunger in Northern Ireland to support primary school children. Chris Collins (Operations Director) contributed to a valuable discussion with Smiley Monroe, focusing on operational sustainability and innovation. Meanwhile, Laura Wray (HR Manager) presented along with Encirc and Giraffe Associates at a Diversity Mark panel discussion on the importance of EDI in ESG. Additionally, Nick Hughes (Commercial Director) led the SupplierTec initiative, bringing together colleagues and suppliers to reflect on the past year and explore new opportunities for growth and responsible business practices.
People-Centric Programs:
JP Corry's emphasis on employee development was underscored by its training initiatives, having recorded 1,348hrs company wide. However, this fell short of the target set at 30hrs training per employee (7890hrs total) which was down 60% from the previous year. JP Corry feel this reflects a shift in the responsibility of recording training completed rather than the training hours not having been completed. The company provided extensive training across various domains, including product knowledge, environmental, health and safety (EHS), and lean project management. Moreover, its commitment to fostering talent was evident through 13 work placements, 1 apprenticeship, and 50% of Job Start placements successfully transitioning to full-time employment, reflecting a dedication to nurturing skills and creating rewarding careers.
Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI):
JP Corry actively engaged in initiatives promoting diversity and inclusion, partnering with organisations such as WomensTEC and conducting surveys to gauge perceptions of women in the construction industry. Noteworthy projects, such as the tool benches designed and built by girls from WomensTEC After School Club, exemplify the company's efforts to challenge traditional gender roles and create inclusive environments. Additionally in 2023, JP Corry became Corporate Members of Women in Business to which 10% of staff have signed up for and utilised opportunities for training and networking events which we hope to continue to build upon.
Health and Wellbeing:
The company prioritised the health and wellbeing of its employees through various initiatives, including wellness programs, mental health talks, and social events. Investments in employee welfare, such as the Cancer Focus Wellness vans and the Winter Warmer initiative, underscore JP Corry's commitment to supporting staff both within and outside the workplace. The construction sector still remains one of the most impacted sectors on mental health, and JP Corry ensures their staff are supported through comprehensive mental health initiatives and resources.

JP Corry's sustainability efforts yielded significant results, including 22% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in Scope 1 and 2, 44 cars transitioned to electric vehicles, 95% of waste diversion from landfills, and adoption of sustainable procurement practices.
