Lagan Building Solutions - LBSLBS are Ireland's leading supplier of natural roofing, cladding and flooring products. We are also the proud owners of the Penrhyn quarry in North Wales which is the home of the famous Bangor Blue – the best quality roofing slate in the world!
Natural slate is the best roofing material in the world and has been used by man for thousands of years. Not only will good quality slate outlast other roofing materials, but when fitted properly, it will frequently outlive the lifetime of its building. The lively market for second hand slates bears this out.
Good quality slate retains its colour and although it may weather with age, it will not fade. It is also an environmentally sound product, producing lower carbon emissions that other 'cement based' roofing materials. In addition, it is non combustible and is compatible with all other building materials. A slate roof is easily maintained, making it an economical choice, and it is available in a variety of sizes, colours and textures.
Penrhyn 'Bangor Blues' are universally acknowledged as the best quality natural roofing slates in the world. Extracted from 590 million year old slate deposits at the Penrhyn quarry in Bethesda, North Wales, this slate is known as the 'Rolls Royce' of roofing materials.
Bangor Blue slates have worldwide appeal and they are sold as far away as to Australia and New Zealand. It has a great affinity with Ireland and records from as far back as 1413 show that this slate was shipped and commercially sold into Ireland.
Indeed, only a hundred years ago, most of Ireland's roofs were covered in slates from this famous quarry.
Although also available in red and grey, most the slates from Penrhyn are an attractive heather blue or purple colour. They come in standard sizes of 500 x 300mm (or 20 x 12") although are available in any size.
Penrhyn slates come in 3 thicknesses: Capital grade (6mm nominal thickness); County grade (8mm nominal thickness); and Celtic Grade (10mm nominal thickness). The Celtic grade slate was designed specifically with the Irish and Scottish markets in mind, where a thicker and more rugged aesthetic appearance is desired. The Celtic slate is also the most price competitive slate in the Welsh Slate range.
Penrhyn slates fully conform to BS EN 12326: Part 1: 2004 and are generally expected to outlive the life of a building (when fixed in accordance with BS 5534 / ICP 2), and are covered by a 100 year quarry backed guarantee.
